I just finished reading Nick Cole’s “surprise launch” novel The End of the World as We Knew It. This won’t be a long review, because the full novel is only .99 right now and I would prefer you would just go and get it and read it rather than you reading me talking about it. 😉
I received an early ARC copy of the book, and when Nick asked me to read it he said, “I know you really don’t like zombie novels, but give this one a read and tell me what you think. Because you don’t like them, I can trust you to tell me the truth about the book.” Well, TEOTWAWKI is fantastic. An absolutely literary read. Stunning, heart-breaking, and visceral. I couldn’t put it down. To me it took the few things I’ve liked about a few zombie novels… the historical recreation of World War Z, the journal feel of Apocalypse Z, and the wounded characters making their way through a broken world feel of Cole’s own Red King series… and included all of them in what amounts to a zombie romance novel. Don’t let that “romance” thing throw you if you are a zombie fan, and don’t let the “zombie” thing throw you if you are a romance fan. This book is really a genre unto itself, with literary aspirations as well. I was touched. I’m not the teary-eyed kind of guy, but I can assure you some of you will need tissues as you read it.
Nick Cole has crafted a weighty novel about sin and redemption, about sorrow and loss, and about what it all means after it’s over. Think of it as The Notebook meets The Walking Dead, only better than that.
And Nick surprised everyone with this book, dropping it out of the blue when no one was expecting a new book from him until the much anticipated launch of Control/Alt/Revolt in November. I love this kind of guerilla sneak attack, and I want to help it succeed. I want you to help too.
Anyway, don’t mess around. Don’t put this on your “TBR” (To Be Read) list. Just get it. And share it. It’s only a buck for a limited time, and this is a favor to you. Nick is a huge star on the horizon, and soon his books (like many mainstream pub books) will be commanding $12 at launch just for the Kindle version. Don’t even shake your head at me, it’s a fact. So get this book for a buck like I told you to.
Go Get it for a Buck!
