Freeze Up, Tater Soup, Gifts and Food Storage

11/30/06 - 5th Day - Before Bedtime. I waited all day to post because blogger is having a problem uploading pictures, but it doesn't look like it is going to work today, so I'll post without the pics, and hope to post them tomorrow. Today was the big cold day, and boy was it ever. Woke up with it about 28 degrees and sleeting. Winds were high and the "real feel" temperature was about 12 degrees most of the day. Started snowing (Yes, it never snows in Central Texas!) later, which was pretty... irritating.

Yesterday we had a friend (our local Longhorn expert Frank) donate a side of beef, which pretty much filled up our freezer (which is pretty nice, don't you think?), and Danielle and I went to Coleman because they were having a huge sale at the grocery and that is when we stock up on our food storage items. We piled up on the canned veggies and other sale itmes while they are cheap, which will help us keep from going into town as much. One of the greatest side-effects of a preparedness lifestyle is that you truly are able to limit your contact with the wicked world. Of course we are looking forward to the day when we can grow most of our food out here, preserve it, and store it in our own root cellar, etc., but we try to always take advantage of the big sales because it helps us in our separation plans. Here is an article I wrote about it that was published in Countryside Magazine:

Be prepared and save money by buying more?

So, today found us stocked up with a full freezer of meat (we had already put about 5 or 6 turkeys in the freezer when we got the side of beef) and enough vegetables to get us through the hectic and worldly "holyday" season. Praise God.

So tomorrow is supposed to be a bit warmer (50's?), although tonight is supposed to be pretty chilly. I found a woodburner in Brownwood I would like to get when I can, but until then we have our little catalytic heater and our oil lamps which keeps us warm enough.

Today I made some Potato soup (a bunch of it) to help keep us warm. Here is my "recipe". I say "recipe" loosely, since I don't measure anything or time anything when I cook.

I took 10 potatoes and cut them into small chunks. I put half of them into a stock pot and let them boil (like you were making mashed potatoes). The other half I put into a very large stock pot (I don't know, maybe 8 quarts or so) which was filled about 2/3 of the way with water. I browned 2 lbs. of Longhorn hamburger beef, strained it well, then put it in the large stock pot with the chunked potatoes. I put both pots on the Coleman stove to boil. When the small pot boils, I turn it down a bit until the potatoes are good for mashing. Mash them like mashed potatoes with butter, pepper, and then pour in some milk to make a creamy, pasty, chunky, creamy, potato glue. Toss this into the other large pot of boiling potatoes. Then I took a frying pan and put in a small amount of olive oil. Season the oil with season salt, garlic salt, pepper, and basil. When the oil is really hot (before it starts to sear or blacken), sprinkle in some flour until it thickens up real stiff. Pour in some milk and stir it in good to get rid of lumps. When it thickens up again, pour in more milk. Keep doing this until your pan is full of this "gravy". By this time hopefully your big pot has boiled off some of the water. If not, and it seems like there is too much water in the big pot, you can ladle some of this soup stock out into quart jars as stock for future soup... or you can pour it into gallon freezer bags for the same purpose. Anyway, once you have the right amount in your large pot, pour the "gravy" into it and stir well. Maybe sprinkle in some dehydrated onions, or any other flavoring you like. Continue to let it simmer, stirring it regularly. If the soup is still a bit thin, then you can make another batch of "gravy", this time using stock from the large pot instead of milk to make the gravy. Then mix the lot back in to the whole batch. If you like your soup chunkier, you can add more potatoes at this point as well. I added in another 5 potatoes. Continue to season to taste. When the chunked potatoes are soft and the soup is thickened and seasoned to taste, serve with tortillas and butter. Yum. It was a hit.

We got the roof put on the root cellar right before the weather hit, so we "somewhat" sealed up the thing with a huge tarp before the ice, snow and rain fell. I am very pleased with the progress, and I hope that it continues so that we can finish it before Jan. 1.

I hope to write more tomorrow, as well as to put out another Q&A Fridays email.

Peace,

Michael Bunker

More Fun with Paypal

So, you will notice that on the 21st of November, the BBB asked me to give them the email used with my Paypal account so they could forward it to Paypal. If you will look down to the information provided on the 22nd, I submitted the bunker2k(at)hotmail.com email address to the BBB. So on the 28th, Paypal sends an automated fake apology where they say they can't find my account at my "editor" address! I'm serious! You can't make this stuff up. Irony is sweet, even when it is actually stupidity, theft and carelessness. In a BBB complaint where it is alleged that Paypal doesn't respond properly to complaints and doesn't read their emails, the company responds with an autoreply that shows that they didn't read the complaint! Rich.

So, why is this company still in business? Oh, yeah... because people are fat, lazy and comfortable and Paypal is easy, even when they are robbing you. The account was locked on the 14th, and still I have no access to it, while some pimple-faced San Jose 20-something moron in the complaint department is figuring out the new PS3.

By the way, if you like, write your own comment to Beth at crme@paypal.com to tell her what you think of the way they are treating a simple Christian farmer.

Then they informed her that her request was going to be upgraded to a "complaint", at which time my account indicated that those funds were frozen for up to 30 days while they performed an "investigation". On my Paypal account there was a button to refund the money, so I clicked on it and was immediately informed "You cannot refund a payment right now because access to your account has been limited." Weather Talk

11/27/06 - 2nd Day - Before Breakfast. December is almost here and it still feels like October. The temperature this morning is a balmy 60 degrees. Most of November has been in the 70's during the day with quite a few days in the 80's. We were getting down to the high 30's at night for awhile, but the last few nights it has been in the 50's and 60's. We sat out on the screened deck last night and it was probably in the 70's. I think our coldest morning yet is on the way though. On Wednesday the prognosticators are calling for one of our patented 50 degree swings. 80+ during the day, and 30 by morning. Winter here comes in fronts, and it rarely stays long. It gets really cold when a front comes through, and this might last for a day or two, maybe more. But it is not uncommon for us to have 70's and 80's in every month of winter, shockingly interrupted by low 20's when a yankee cold front marches through.

Things are about to get really busy down here. We are trying to get the root cellar finished by January 1 (if the Lord wills), and we will be starting a second root cellar and a milking shed as well. Then yesterday one of the ladies asked us to start on her cabin, which we will be doing simultaneously. Two other families will be moving down by the 1st of January as well.

Our new friend Homer (one of the neighbors) came by yesterday to say hi. Homer is an older fella and he likes to stop by in his big truck and sit on our porch with us and chat. His son lives about a mile north of us and told us he was going to shoot a deer for us this winter. So I was showing Homer the root cellar, and he says, "You oughtta see this underground house that was on the land my son bought. It was built by an old man who died about 10 years ago. He built it all by hand". So I told him I would love to see it, so we drove over to the land to take a look at it. This old man had built this underground house (about 1000 square foot) by hand. It had mortared rock walls and a cement roof held up by cement pillars. This old man had built this whole house by hand (it is empty now). He sold the land to Homer's son about 10 years before he died, with the agreement that he could live in it until he either died or had to go into a rest home. Anyway, I learned a lot by just looking around at how the old man did things. By the way, the old man had also built a nice milking shed, so I learned a lot about that too!

I am convinced that building a good part of the house underground is THE way to do things here. Because of the extreme heat in the summer, the cost of cooling a structure is prohibitive for those who want to live our lifestyle. It's not just that we want to keep people cool either. You can't store ketchup, mayo or other things when it gets to 111 outside and it is over 90 in the cabin overnight. This past summer, my children's crayons melted on the interior porch. So that is why we have been working so hard on the root cellar, and will be building a second (but different) one soon. There needs to be a place to store food and other items out of the heat, and it will also be a place for us to get out of the heat for awhile too. This is a great place to live, with awesome weather most of the time, but the extreme heat in the summer is our one mountain that has to be climbed. We are going to be climbing that mountain (with the Lord's help) this winter and spring. I hope to finish the two root cellars, refit new windows in the cabin, install heat shield material in the roof, install what is called Roman air-conditioning (non-electric), and we are going to repaint the cabin a lighter color. That with more insulation and a better cross breeze ought to really help us cool things down next summer. Of course, we make our plans, but the Lord directs our steps.

We have planned for our second root cellar to be a 20' x 8' one built in a totally different (but still old school) style. This one should be even cheaper to build than the first one. I have been studying how people used to make root cellars back when this land was first settled. The "dugout" or root cellar was the first construction project on the land back then, and after having gone through two summers here I know why.

Hope the weather is nice where YOU are. Maybe leave a comment and tell us what it is like.

More pics and Scattershooting

11/25/06 - 6th Day - After Lunch. Preparation of the Sabbath. We stayed pretty busy this week, even though Paypal's malfeasance has left us perilously short of funds. We should finish the east wall of the root cellar in concrete today. I also built an ugly, but utilitarian wood grill for heating water (and other things) in the morning for the chickens:

As you can see, it isn't pretty, but it will work. I used field stone I pulled out of our pasture, and some left over mortar mix from the root cellar work. I am trying to be less "catty" in my descriptions, but here is the description I was going to put on the above picture:

"Here you see a very dense and homely creature... his name is Robert and he is standing in my new hot water heating grill."

We have to heat up water during the cold weather to give to the chickens to keep their egg production up. This little grill will allow us to do it for free.

Ok, here is a picture of our pig. I call him "Mr. Pig":

We almost lost Mr. Pig a week ago or so. We think he got poisoned somehow, probably by laying and sleeping in the Johnson Grass hay we put in the pig pen to keep him warm. Johnson Grass is notorious because it turns toxic (cyanide) after a freeze, and remains that way for 7 days or until it is dead. We thought all the Johnson Grass we put in his pen was dead, but somehow he might have gotten poisoned by it. The first day he was breathing but couldn't get up. The next day we got him up, but he was very shaky. After a few days we could get him to leave the pen and root around a bit, and he seems to get better every day, though his legs are still very slow and shaky. So, in keeping with my new desire not to use my satiric wit ALL the time, I did not put this caption under the pig:

"This is our pig. I call him
Alexander Litvinenko. Apparently our pig is hated for exposing the evil Putin and his rejuvenated KGB."

Here are some scattershooting thoughts:

My children know nothing of football or baseball. They have no idea as to the rules, or what those people might be doing running around like that. They do, however, read at a very young age, and are very creative in their play, and are well-spoken and intelligent. A friend put a comment on my last blog (with pictures of the children) pointing out that people think we are evil and cruel to raise our children away from the corruptions of the world. Here was my response if you didn't read it:
Hey Bryan, yes it is very interesting. You know, it always used to shock us when people would say... "You have the best behaved children I have ever seen", followed by, "you must be lucky!". Then, later we would hear that they would attack us (always behind our backs) by saying "they must beat them", or "isn't it horrible that they don't get to do Christmas or go to malls". I can tell you that it is a rare time that we go to a restaurant and somebody doesn't interrupt our meal to tell us how shocked they are at watching our family. This isn't an 'every once in awhile' thing, but virtually every time we go out. The last time we went to eat in Santa Anna, a man kept looking over at us, and finally he came over to me and said, "I can see by the way your children act and how they are happy that they have a mommy and daddy who love them and who properly train then, and that you are a true family"... Yet our own families treat us like Koresh and the Manson Family. Strange?

Michael
Today we started marking out a 12 x 20 milking shed. It will use some antique construction techniques and should be very inexpensive to build. I am going to use the rock and mortar for a foundation wall (hopefully I will improve at it!) and then build with timbers cut from the land.

I am very amused and a bit angry about the whole uproar over the Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) "racism" thing. If you haven't read about this (good on you!), Richards blew up at some black hecklers during a comedy routine and called them "niggers" (I refuse to say, or type, "n-word"). There is no excuse for being stupid and reacting to hecklers by ruining your own act and maybe your career, but if you have watched the video, these idiots repeatedly call the Jew Richards a "cracker" during the whole confrontation. The word Nigger is bad. The word Cracker is good. Is anyone calling for these hecklers to publicly apologize, kiss the ring of David Duke and promise to attend a KKK rally? Besides, Richards is a Jew... is anyone surprised that a Jew might be a racist? Jesse Jackson wants the word "nigger" to be stricken from the language and declared "hate speech" (supposedly for everyone, though I doubt we will see blacks arrested and charged for greeting their niggas). Just another reason that all Christians everywhere should separate themselves from this society and culture. As opposed to some anonymous internet vomiters, I am proposing a solution to the problem and not just repeated and useless bouts of moral outrage. Sell your possessions, get out of debt, buy some rural land in a place where this type of goofiness doesn't even make the news (preferably with like-minded believers), and begin a life of cultural separateness and holiness. Grow your own food, and provide for yourself and your family from the ground like the Bible says for you to do. Don't sit there as a part of this corrupt and wicked industrial system and complain about the little part of it you don't like. If you live and work in this system then you are a part of it. Your votes will not change it. You will not make a difference by being a voice of moral outtrage towards a system you support and nourish every day of your working life. It is ridiculous for one hand to protest that the other hand is feeding the body poison...
"Stop it you hand! I am outraged! outraged! I will alert the feet and toes to your wickedness!"
...but what can you expect from anonymous people who have nothing better to do than to accuse southern, Agrarian, Christian men of making up questions to ask themselves?

So, how are y'all doing?

Some Pics For Ya

11/23/06 - 5th Day - After Breakfast. Thanksgiving Day. Here are some pictures from this week on the ranch.

This first picture is of the root cellar. The west wall, which you can see, has been poured in concrete and the roof rafters (2 x 10's) are going up.

This second pic doesn't show much more, except that we have started pouring concrete in the east wall. We hope to be finished with the east wall today. You can also see the excavation for the entrance.

This next pic is of little Sarah Grace as she sorts silverware on the porch. Behind her, through the window out of the front of the cabin and through the screened porch you can see the Sifford's camper and propane grill.

This picture is of the children playing on their new tire swing. Robert is pushing Tracy and Jennifer cannot wait until her turn.

Here Jennifer gets her turn.

Here are the children with their cats.

Well, I hope everyone has a great day, and if you are giving thanks today, do it sincerely and from a full knowledge of the debt owed for our salvation and our peace. May God richly bless you and keep you and bring you into Christ's Kingdom.

I am your servant in Christ Jesus,

Hand on the Plow

11/22/06 - 4th Day - After Breakfast. Breakfast of bacon, eggs, potatoes and homemade wheat biscuits.

We continue our work on the root cellar. We are almost finished pouring the concrete for the east wall. We had to stop so that I could put in the PVC pipe for the air intake and outtake, and I will have to put in some conduit for running a bit of electricity down there. We also have most of the rafters up on the west half.

I received the December issue of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine yesterday. It usually has some great articles and pictures. It has a picture on the back cover of a cabin built long ago out of logs, rock and mortar. Things like that give me ideas. We have plenty of crooked trees and rocks here on the land. Maybe we will build me an office at the next Ranchfest! Old Style.

No resolution yet from our Paypal debacle.

We are now thinking about restarting the Isaiah series in January, if the Lord wills. I believe we have finished 32 or 33 parts of Isaiah. Now would be a good time to get caught up on the audio sermons if you plan on staying with us as we move forward in that study. I also hope to start up the Revelation study again soon. I have only posted 4 parts of the Revelation study, but I think we have finished 11. So I will start by uploading the other 7 parts for your study.

Duty, and our diligence in it, is a primary reflection of obedience in the Christian, and is one of the most evident graces to be found in the regenerate man. The converse of Duty is negligence, and it is made most apparant by ready excuses.

Quick Update

11/19/06 - 1st Day - Before Bedtime. Just a quick note to tell you all that we had a very nice Sabbath and Lord's Day fellowship. Things have been a bit tight since Paypal has locked up my account, but we are doing well enough. The weather has been nice and temperate, and I have gotten a lot of reading done. Tomorrow I am going to drive the Siffords up to Abilene so that they can catch a flight to visit some family for Thanksgiving.

Oh, the other day, when we drove into the drive through at the little Santa Anna bank we use, there was a huge, wild Tom turkey in the drive through. When I drove up, the bank teller was calling him through the intercom, and he then hopped right up on the van hood while we were transacting our business. He stayed there on the hood of my van until we pulled out and he flew off. Strange. I bet that never happens in the big city.

The latest impromptu sermon from today is already up:

Rule the Spirit?

I will write more soon if the Lord wills,

The Christ Mass - tract

The earliest residents of the American Colonies were predominantly Doctrines of Grace adherents (modernly improperly called “Calvinists”) who strongly rejected the Roman Catholic/Pagan arrangement called “Christmas”…

“For preventing disorders, arising in several places within this jurisdiction by reason of some still observing such festivals as were superstitiously kept in other communities, to the great dishonor of God and offense of others: it is therefore ordered by this court and the authority thereof that whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like, either by forbearing of labor, feasting, or any other way, upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so offending shall pay for every such offence five shilling as a fine to the county.”

Massachusetts Bay Colony - May 11, 1659

Conscience Test... The Christ-Mass
By Michael Bunker
editor@lazarusunbound.com

"Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil" (Ex. 23:2)

In an article I wrote back in 2001, I spoke at length about a topic that I think is one of the most neglected topics in Christendom. I spoke about the Conscience.

The conscience is the organ of communication with God that is designed to regulate our daily behavior. The numerous warnings in scripture about protecting and heeding the conscience are vital to our understanding of how we are to operate in these perilous times. The ultimate test of the Conscience, for each of us and for those around us, is how well we are willing to entertain truth. Will we shun truth in favor of comfort? Will we reject truth in favor of compromise? Moral and philosophical cowards are willing to relegate “truth” to a subjective thing, anesthetizing the conscience rather than guarding it.

They will say “Whose truth?”

Every year, such a conscience test presents itself. During the time of year that people call “The Holidays”, we have a wonderful test of how people regard “truth”, and how willing they are to sear their own consciences. For the nominal “Christian” - the ultimate test is the Christ Mass.

Why, you may ask, do I continue to term this “holiday”, the Christ Mass? I do so because it is a holiday of (and for) Papists. Here is the definition of Christmas from the Catholic Encyclopedia: The word for Christmas in late Old English is Cristes Maesse, the Mass of Christ. A “mass” is the celebration or prayer for the soul of one who has died, it is a celebration of death.

The Catholic Encyclopedia goes on to say, rather blatantly:

Christmas was NOT among the earliest festivals of the church. In fact, one of the earliest of the Catholic writers said, “that in the scriptures sinners alone, not saints, celebrate their birthday.”

Charles Spurgeon is considered by most evangelicals to be one of the greatest of the Protestant preachers of the 1800’s. Virtually every seminary and all of the mainline churches honor the preaching and teaching of Spurgeon, although most have since rejected the basis of his teachings on the doctrines of grace and election. Here is what the great historical Baptist preacher Charles H. Spurgeon had to say about the Christ Mass:

"We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas. First because we do not believe in any mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be sung in Latin or in English: Secondly, because we find no scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior; and consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority. Superstition has fixed most positively the day of our Savior's birth, although there in no possibility of discovering when it occurred. It was not till the middle of the third century that any part of the Church celebrated the birth of our Lord; and it was not till long after the western Church had set the example, that the eastern adopted it. Because the day is not known. Probably the fact is that the "holy" days were arranged to fit in with the heathen festivals. We venture to assert that if there be any day in the year of which we may be pretty sure that it was not the day on which our Savior was born it is the 25th of December. Regarding not the day, let us give God thanks for the gift of His dear Son.”

It would be great if I could say that for most people this is the first they heard of such a thing. But I have to doubt it. The exposition of the Christ Mass has been widespread in the past few years. Yet most will only shrug at the information, and do nothing about it.

Why is that?

The bible says that we are to hold TRUTH in the highest esteem, that we are to harden not our hearts against it, and that we ought to pursue truth over comfort, compromise and peace. The bible implores the Christian to harden not his heart against the truth, and to lend not his members over to uncleanness and paganism. What fellowship do we have with the millions of antichrists who brazenly celebrate this holiday according to the traditions of the world?

Will we not hear God? Will we not hear the scripture? Will we not hear the past heroes of our faith?

If we will not hear God, and we will shun the scripture or our church fathers - let us hear from the reprobates on the matter. They admit that Christmas belongs to them. What follows is a pamphlet put out by a group of homosexuals and lesbians regarding Christmas. There is more truth here, although from a skewed and perverted angle - then most professing “Christians” are willing to accept:

Why We All Celebrate At Christmas-Time - (from the ‘Pink Triangle Trust’)

We all (well, nearly all) celebrate at Christmas-time because everyone else is doing so, and we don't want to miss out on the fun. People have been doing so at this time of year since prehistoric times, but why is everybody celebrating? The answer is that in the world's northern hemisphere it is the time of the winter solstice (about December 22).

Midsummer Day is June 24 each year, but the longest day (the summer solstice) is actually about June 21. After that date the period of daylight gets shorter every day, and night-time gets longer. At the winter solstice the turning point is reached and, from then onwards, the daylight hours will increase and those of darkness decrease, until the next summer solstice.

Survival through the winter, any winter, could be a hard struggle in bygone ages, so the turning point of the year was definitely the time to celebrate. Afterwards people could start looking forward to springtime and to summer.

The ways to celebrate Christmas-time have varied through the ages, but eating special foods, and drinking with friends, has always played a central part. It brightens up the long dull winter season. Think how long and bleak winter would seem without it!

Our customs show the wide variety and origins of our present winter solstice celebrations ...

Why December 25?

For millennia, the promise of spring and summer has been more important than we can easily imagine today. Perhaps that is why early cultures introduced evergreen decorations (laurel or holly) into their homes - they are hope- filled symbols of life in the winter gloom.

In ancient Egypt the birth of the god Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis, was celebrated on December 25.

In the Roman world, there was the Saturnalia, the festival of Saturn, the god of harvests. Originally this took place on December 19 but it was extended for seven days. It was the merriest festival of the Roman year. All business stopped. Slaves were given temporary freedom to say and do what they liked, and certain moral restrictions were eased (the modern equivalent being the office party). The holiday concluded on December 25 with a great feast, when presents were exchanged. In addition, towards the end of the Roman empire, there was the celebration of the birth of the Unconquered Sun (natalis solis invicti), on December 25 of course. The god Mithras had a large following in the empire, particularly amongst the military. After midnight, on the first moment of December 25, the Mithraic temples would be lit up, with priests in white robes at the altars, and boys burning incense, similar to what happens today in Roman Catholic churches. At sunrise the priests would declare: "The god is born". Mithras was the principal Persian deity by the 5th century BCE. He was rock-born of a virgin goddess on December 25 and shepherds were the first to learn of his birth. He came from heaven and redeemed believers from their sins.

Among Celtic and Germanic tribes, the winter solstice was held in veneration from earliest times. And for Norsemen, too, the time had a special meaning. Their deities were active on earth from December 25 to January 6.

Trees and Logs

A tradition which stems from the old Norse custom of burning oak logs in honour of the god Thor is the yule log. It survives today as a chocolate-covered cake for Christmas teas.

Originally a log was placed on the fire as the yule log. It was one of the most important parts of Christmas Eve. It burnt throughout the night, and it was held to be unlucky if the fire went out. On Christmas Day morning the log was replaced by a young fir tree to represent rebirth.

From this tradition may stem the idea of decorated Christmas trees brought to Britain from Germany in Victorian times.

Mistletoe

Mistletoe was a sacred plant for the Druids, while for Romans it was a symbol of peace. Enemies were supposed to discard their arms and declare a truce under it; hence the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe.

Greetings Cards

These date from the 1840s and became popular from the time of the introduction of stamps and the penny post.

Father Christmas

The jolly fat man with long white beard, in a red outfit and shiny black boots, who gives presents, is the result of a collection of traditions.

Father Christmas, a character from medieval mummers plays, has merged with St Nicholas, the Christian patron saint of children, to become Santa Claus. His sleigh was first shown by illustrators in the 1860s.
Christmas Abolished

Onto deeply loved festivals Christians superimposed the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The word 'Christmas' means the day on which a mass is said for the soul of Christ. The takeover is often brazen, and it is extremely unlikely that Jesus was born on December 25. In fact in 1652 Christians decided to scrap Christmas altogether and passed a law forbidding any observance of it. The festival was restored in 1660.

Pagans are rightly declaring that Christmas belongs to them, and they would like to have it back. I say we should surely give it to them. It is abominable that the pagans and idolaters would know more about the practice of Christmas than the average professing “christian” does.

Their facts are correct. The early colonists forbade the celebration of the Christ-Mass, knowing full well that it was a pagan and ungodly practice. Let us hear from the great Bible teacher and thinker, A.W. Pink, here is an excerpt from his thoughtful article on this subject:

“Christmas is coming! Quite so; but what is "Christmas?" Does not the very term itself denote its source - "Christ-mass." Thus it is of Romish origin, brought over from Paganism. But, says someone, Christmas is the time when we commemorate the Saviour's birth. It is? And who authorized such commemoration? Certainly God did not. The Redeemer bade His disciples "remember" Him in His death, but there is not a word in Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, which tells us to celebrate His birth. Moreover, who knows when, in what month, He was born? The Bible is silent thereon. Is it without reason that the only "birthday" commemorations mentioned in God's Word are Pharaoh's (Gen. 40:20) and Herod's (Matt. 14:6)? Is this recorded "for our learning?" If so, have we prayerfully taken it to heart?

And who is it that celebrates "Christmas?" The whole "civilized world." Millions who make no profession of faith in the blood of the Lamb, who "despise and reject Him," and millions more who while claiming to be His followers yet in works deny Him, join in merrymaking under the pretense of honoring the birth of the Lord Jesus. Putting it on its lowest ground, we would ask, Is it fitting that His friends should unite with His enemies in a worldly round of fleshly gratification? Does any truly born-again soul really think that He whom the world cast out is either pleased or glorified by such participation in the world's joys? Verily, the customs of the people are vain; and it is written, "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil" (Ex. 23:2).

Some will argue for the "keeping of Christmas" on the ground of "giving the kiddies a good time." But why do this under cloak of honoring the Saviour's birth? Why is it necessary to drag in His holy name in connection with what takes place at that season of carnal jollification? Is this taking the little ones with you out of Egypt (Ex. 10:9,10) a type of the world, or is it not plainly a mingling with the present-day Egyptians in their "pleasures of sin for a season?" (Heb. 11:25). Scripture says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Prov. 22:6). Scripture does command God's people to bring up their children "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:4), but where does it stipulate that it is our duty to give the little ones a "good time?" Do we ever give the children "a good time" when we engage in anything upon which we cannot fittingly ask the Lord's blessing?”

The Presbyterian minister Abraham Anderson, in his work Lectures on Theology, said:

“Christmas, or the Nativity, is unauthorized. The time is utterly unknown, being left in impenetrable darkness by the Holy Spirit in the divine records; and no doubt this was done because the knowledge of it was unnecessary, and in order to repress will-worship. In a word, while fast-days are appointed on account of the duty to be performed, in set days, or periodical days, the duty is observed on account of the day; and therefore the day must be of divine appointment, or it is sinful.”

Robert Nevin, a reformed minister said this in 1893:

“If the Apostle Paul were permitted to revisit earth, we might imagine him addressing them somewhat after the following manner:--'Ye men of a half-reformed Church, ye observe days and times. Ye have a whole calendar of so-called saints' days. Ye observe a Holy Thursday and a Good Friday. Ye have a time called Easter, and a season called Lent, about which some of you make no small stir. Ye have a day regarded especially holy, named Christmas, observed at a manifestly wrong season of the year, and notoriously grafted on an old Pagan festival. And all this while many of you refuse to acknowledge the continued obligation of the Fourth Commandment. I am afraid of you, lest the instruction contained in my epistle, as well as in other parts of Scripture, has been bestowed upon you in vain.’”

And so I leave this issue to you and your conscience. You may, if you wish, continue on that wide and well worn path of fellowship and merriment that so many share with the unbelieving world, or you may heed the call of God, the call of the scripture and the words of those wise and honored teachers of our past. Either way, it is between you and your God.

It can be well noted, though, by the only spiritual authority that matters, that you have been told - therefore the responsibility lies with you.

***If you still doubt the Catholic basis and defense of Christmas… here is an excerpt from an article written by a Roman Catholic, defending Christmass….

“In cold New England, the zeal of the Puritans persisted long after it had faded away in England. The holiday remained outlawed in Massachusetts until the second half of the nineteenth century. While we think of Christmas as something we've been doing since time immemorial, our present practices are virtual novelties. It was not until immigrants from Ireland [Roman Catholics] and from the continent began arriving in great numbers that Christmas in America began to flourish. The Germans [Pagans] brought their Christmas tree. The Irish placed lights in their windows. Catholic immigrants from Eastern Europe brought their native carols as well as the radical idea of staying home from work on Christmas Day! Very soon their neighbors, charmed by these unfamiliar, but appealing innovations, followed the pattern set by the new immigrant groups and invented new customs of their own. Eventually a powerful surge of enthusiasm from people of all faiths swept resistance away. In the end, neither the moral authority of the church, nor the power of the state, could prevent the spirit of Christmas with all its excess from erupting throughout the nation. The spirit of Christmas has a life of its own, undisciplined, unorganized, chaotic, overly-commercial, ever-present, Invincible! All efforts to reform it or change it or amend it have failed, despite countless efforts to do so. So my feeling is, if you can't beat it, join it.” (They Tried to Outlaw Christmas, by Catholic - Charles Henderson) [Comments in brackets are mine… MB]

XMAS
by A. W. Pink

"Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen… for the CUSTOMS of the people are vain." (Jer. 10:1-3)

Christmas is coming! Quite so; but what is "Christmas"? Does not the very term itself denote its source—"Christ-mass." Thus it is of Romish origin, brought over from Paganism. But, says someone, Christmas is the time when we commemorate the Savior's birth. It is? And who authorized such commemoration? Certainly God did not. The Redeemer bade His disciples "remember" Him in His death, but there is not a word in Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation which tells us to celebrate His birth. Moreover, who knows when, in what month, He was born? The Bible is silent thereon. Is it without reason that the only "birthday" commemorations mentioned in God's Word are Pharaoh's (Gen. 40:20) and Herod's (Matt. 14:6)? Is this recorded "for our learning"? If so, have we prayerfully taken it to heart?

And who is it that celebrates "Christmas"? The whole "civilized world." Millions who make no profession of faith in the blood of the Lamb, who "despise and reject Him," and millions more who while claiming to be His followers yet in works deny Him, join in merrymaking under the pretense of honoring the birth of the Lord Jesus. Putting it on its lowest ground, we would ask, Is it fitting that His friends should unite with His enemies in a worldly round of fleshly gratification? Does any truly born-again soul really think that He whom the world cast out is either pleased or glorified by such participation in the world's joys? Verily, "the customs of the people are vain"; and it is written, "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil." (Ex. 23:2)

Some will argue for the "keeping of Christmas" on the ground of "giving the kiddies a good time." But why do this under the cloak of honoring the Savior's birth? Why is it necessary to drag in His holy name in connection with what takes place at that season of carnal jollification? Is this taking the little ones with you out of Egypt (Ex. 10:9, 10) a type of the world, or is it not plainly mingling with the present-day Egyptians in their "pleasures of sin for a season"? (Heb. 11:25) Scripture says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Prov. 22:6) Scripture does command God's people to bring up their children "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:4), but where does it stipulate that it is our duty to give the little ones a "good time"? Do we ever give the children "a good time" when we engage in anything upon which we cannot fittingly ask the Lord's blessing?

There are those who do abstain from some of the grosser carnalities of the "festive season," yet are they nevertheless in cruel bondage to the prevailing custom of "Christmas" namely that of exchanging "gifts." We say "exchanging" for that is what it really amounts to in many cases. A list is kept, either on paper or in memory, of those from whom gifts were received last year, and that for the purpose of returning the compliment this year. Nor is this all: great care has to be taken that the "gift" made to the friend is worth as much in dollars and cents as the one they expect to receive from him or her. Thus, with many who can ill afford it, a considerable sum has to be set aside each year with which to purchase things simply to send them out in return for others which are likely to be received. Thus a burden has been bound on them which not a few find hard to bear.

But what are we to do? If we fail to send out "gifts" our friends will think hard of us, probably deem us stingy and miserly. The honest course is to go to the trouble of notifying them—by letter if at a distance—that from now on you do not propose to send out any more "Christmas gifts" as such. Give your reasons. State plainly that you have been brought to see that "Christmas merry-making" is entirely a thing of the world, devoid of any Scriptural warrant; that it is a Romish institution, and now that you see this, you dare no longer have any fellowship with it (Eph. 5:11); that you are the Lord's "free man" (1 Cor. 7:22), and therefore you refuse to be in bondage to a costly custom imposed by the world.

What about sending out "Christmas cards" with a text of Scripture on them? That also is an abomination in the sight of God. Why? Because His Word expressly forbids all unholy mixtures; Deut. 22:10, 11 typified this. What do we mean by an "unholy mixture"? This: the linking together of the pure Word of God with the Romish "Christ-mass." By all means send cards (preferably at some other time of the year) to your ungodly friends, and Christians too, with a verse of Scripture, but not with "Christmas" on it. What would you think of a printed program of a vaudeville having Isa. 53:5 at the foot of it? Why, that it was altogether out of place, highly incongruous. But in the sight of God the circus and the theatre are far less obnoxious than the "Christmas celebration" of Romish and Protestant "churches." Why? Because the latter are done under the cover of the holy name of Christ; the former are not.

"But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." (Prov. 4:18) Where there is a heart that really desires to please the Lord, He graciously grants increasing knowledge of His will. If He is pleased to use these lines in opening the eyes of some of His dear people to recognize what is a growing evil, and to show them that they have been dishonoring Christ by linking the name of the Man of Sorrows (and such He was, when on earth) with a "Merry Christmas," then join with the writer in a repentant confessing of this sin to God, seeking His grace for complete deliverance from it, and praise Him for the light which He has granted you concerning it.

Beloved fellow-Christian, "The coming of the Lord draweth nigh." (Jas. 5:8) Do we really believe this? Believe it not because the Papacy is regaining its lost temporal power, but because God says so—"for we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Cor. 5:7) If so, what effects does such believing have on our walk? This may be your last Christmas on earth. During it the Lord may descend from heaven with a shout to gather His own to Himself. Would you like to be summoned from a "Christmas party" to meet Him in the air? The call for the moment is, "Go ye out to meet Him" (Matt. 25:6) out from a Godless Christendom, out from the Christ-deserted "churches," out from the horrible burlesque of "religion" which now masquerades under His name.

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." (2 Cor. 5:10) How solemn and searching! The Lord Jesus declared that "every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." (Matt. 12:36) If every "idle word" is going to be taken note of, then most assuredly will be every wasted energy, every wasted dollar, every wasted hour! Should we still be on earth when the closing days of this year arrive, let writer and reader earnestly seek grace to live and act with the judgment-seat of Christ before us. His "well done" will be ample compensation for the sneers and taunts which we may now receive from Christless souls.

Does any Christian reader imagine for a moment that when he or she shall stand before their holy Lord, that they will regret having lived "too strictly" on earth? Is there the slightest danger of His reproving any of His own because they were "too extreme" in "abstaining from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." (1 Peter 2:11) ? We may gain the good will and good word of worldly religionists today by our compromisings on "little (?) points," but shall we receive His smile of approval on that Day? Oh to be more concerned about what He thinks, and less concerned about what perishing mortals think.

"Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil." (Ex. 23:2) Ah, it is an easy thing to float with the tide of popular opinion; but it takes much grace, diligently sought from God, to swim against it. Yet that is what the heir of heaven is called on to do: to "Be not conformed to this world" (Rom. 12:2), to deny self, take up the cross, and follow a rejected Christ. How sorely does both writer and reader need to heed that word of the Savior, "Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown." (Rev. 3:11) Oh that each of us may be able to truthfully say, "I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep Thy Word." (Psa. 119:101)

Our final word is to the pastors. To you the Word of the Lord is, "Be thou an example of believers in word, in deportment, in love in spirit, in faith, in purity." (1 Tim. 4:12) Is it not true that the most corrupt "churches" you know of, where almost every fundamental of the faith is denied, will have their "Christmas celebrations?" Will you imitate them? Are you consistent to protest against unscriptural methods of "raising money," and then to sanction unscriptural "Christmas services"? Seek grace to firmly but lovingly set God's Truth on this subject before your people, and announce that you can have no part in following Pagan, Romish, and Worldly customs.

Christmas and the Scripture

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (II Timothy 2:15).

Christians are to measure all things by the rule of scripture. Thus when we consider Christmas we should not hesitate to test its authenticity by God's word. One who seeks to do this is immediately met with a quandary. Where do we find this holy day in the Bible? What are our instructions with regard to this festivity? Where can we look for the authority for our involvement in the traditions intimate with it? Are there commands of our Lord and the apostles concerning it, as there are with the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper?

Christmas and the Scripture, by Joe Garnett

The scripture records the fact of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ in two of the gospels. Other than these and the prophecies concerning it, there is no big scriptural emphasis with regard to it. (Let it be understood that the incarnation and the birth are not one and the same. The incarnation took place about nine months prior to the birth). The one who would defend the festival of Christmas is left with no biblical basis with respect to a date, instruction or authority for its observance. At this point the proponent of Christmas will often assert that the Bible in no place commands us not to observe the holiday so we can do what we wish. The opponent is chastened to show scripturally why he would deny the "liberty" of others to do what they want to do. I believe those that bring pagan holidays, feasts, myths, etc. into Christ's Church are the ones that bear the burden of scripturally defending their actions. However, there is biblical teaching that shows their error in participation of such religiosity.

Before proceeding further I wish to point out that Christmas is a "christianized" pagan festival. It finds it origin in Babylonian mythology. The Roman festival of Saturnalia was celebrated during the winter solstice. This festival was incorporated into the evolving Roman Catholic religious system in its early days. There are those who will deny this, yet at the same time they cannot produce a Biblical origin or even another historical one. It is not our purpose at this time to deal with this aspect. The student is encouraged to read other sources. My first suggestion would be The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop, published by Loizeaux Brothers, Neptune, New Jersey. The Lord Jesus Christ once rebuked the religious leaders of His day saying, "But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matt. 15:9). The sinful nature of men often leads them into pseudo worship of God in their own way and with their own devices. They believe they can add to or modify that which God has revealed and present to Him something better that will please him. However, God prefers obedience to His word rather than our "sacrifices."

Consider some selected portions from Deuteronomy 12 in which God instructed His people Israel:

And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place (vs. 3) Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes (vs. 8). What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it (vs. 32).

The Lord God instructed his people to destroy all the items of heathen worship. They were not to be incorporated into the worship of the one true God. This instruction is seen also in the following portions of scripture:

The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: Thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God. Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing (Deut. 7:25,26).

And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel (II Kings 23:4).

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver (Acts 19:19).

Thus we see that the accursed things were not to be saved and used in the service of God or for other purposes. Proper disposal involved burning them with fire. My belief is that these "cursed things" are identical with or related to what is known today in the occult as "familiar objects." These objects which come from pagan and occult origins have evil spirits associated with them. For this reason they have influence when anyone partakes of them in any fashion. Mature Christians would never have a crystal ball, quija board or tarot cards in their home. But they would have numerous other items associated with paganism. These items have influence whether the item is there by ignorance or is known to be occultic (even though the consequences of its presence is denied). I have seen such items in various Christian’s homes, particularly at Christmas.

Let us turn our attention to verses 8 and 32 of Deuteronomy 12, cited above. We understand that each man was not to do what he felt like doing. He was to observe the command of the Lord, not adding to it or subtracting from it. Nadab and Abihu did not understand this. There came a time when they "offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not" (Lev. 10:1). The result of their act was death by toasting when fire from the Lord consumed them.

Saul also missed this principle as demonstrated by two of his acts of rebellion. First, he offered a burnt offering he was not to render (I Sam. 13:12). Secondly, he was instructed to destroy the Amalakites and all that belonged to them. However, he chose to spare "the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God" (I Sam. 15:15). How thoughtful of him. We might argue that he was sincere. But sincerity is not the issue and the Lord desired obedience and not a human initiated sacrifice using that which God had cursed. Even David transgressed when he had the ark of God transported on a cart (II Sam. 6:1-7). It was supposed to be carried using the rings and staves (Exo. 25:12-15). The Levites were to be the carriers (I Chron. 15:2, 13-15). After the death of Uzzah, David came to understand that "the Lord our God made a breach upon us, for we sought him not after the due order" (I Chron. 15:13).

Don't you think it is important that we refrain from doing what is right in our own eyes and observe that which we are commanded, adding nothing and taking away nothing? If you concur, you must understand that you cannot take a pagan holiday cluttered with traditions and objects, incorporate it into biblical Christianity and please God.

Having searched the scripture for Christmas, I believe that it is found most prominently in the books of I & II Timothy and Titus. It is here that we are instructed concerning fables (myths), vain babblings, oppositions of science (knowledge) falsely so called, and foolish and unlearned questions.

Using these three books, I & II Timothy and Titus, let us take a ten point true/false test concerning Christmas.

Remember that Christmas has it origins in Babylonian mythology, the early church did not acknowledge it, there is no date given for Jesus' birth and there are no commands or instructions for celebrating such a festival. No cheating, you must look up the verses before answering.

I Tim. 1:4 We are to give heed to Christmas, which ministers many questions regarding the date of the birth of Christ, and the traditions associated with it.

I Tim. 1:5 Christmas is of faith unfeigned. It is genuine, supported by the scripture.

I Tim. 1:10 All that we practice with regard to Christmas is not contrary to sound doctrine because the Bible is full of instructions concerning it.

I Tim. 4:11 Christmas is among the things that Paul told Timothy (and others) to command and teach.

I Tim. 6:3 When one promotes Christmas, he is teaching according to the wholesome words of our Lord Jesus Christ and proper doctrine.

II Tim. 1:13 When Timothy was told to hold fast to the form of sound words which Paul taught, this included Christmas.

II Tim. 2:15 One who rightly divides the word of truth finds that Christmas is the greatest Christian holy day, worthy of musical productions, parties, candlelight services, etc.

II Tim. 2:23 Christmas never engenders strife among believers because of its unquestionable biblical support.

II Tim. 4:4 Some people have believed and incorporated fables into the church, but certainly this is not the case with us and our celebration of Christmas.

Titus 2:1 Because we are committed only to sound doctrine, we should talk about and do Christmas year round.

Christmas is a fable. It is pagan and extra-biblical. One involved with it is busying himself about past traditions. It does not represent factual truth. It is deceptive, pretending to be something it is not.

Don't learn the way of the heathen for their customs are vain (Jer. 10:2,3). Don't be spoiled "...through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world..." (Col. 2:8) Refuse profane and old wives fables (I Tim 4:7). Shun profane and vain babbllings (II Tim. 2:16). Avoid foolish and unlearned questions (II Tim. 2:23).

Do worship God in truth (John 4:24). Glory only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal. 6:14). "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (I Thess. 5:21). Hold fast the form of sound words, that is, the words of Scripture (II Tim. 1:13). Rightly divide the word of truth (II Tim. 2:15). Continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, that is, the truth of Holy Scripture (II Tim. 3: 14,15). Speak the things which become sound doctrine (Titus 2:1).

I call upon Christians to reject Christmas as well as other extra-biblical traditions and pagan holidays. Earnestly contend NOT for this fable, but "for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3).

Some facts for your consideration:

Christ taught his disciples to avoid paganism, and never encouraged the celebration of his birth.

The early Church knew nothing of Christmas, and rejected all such forms of idolatry.

The Puritans and Colonials rejected and even banned Christmas as pagan, and offensive to Christianity.,

But…. HITLER LOVED CHRISTMAS! -

It seems that, like most occultists and Romanists, Hitler loved Christmas. Books were the gift of choice for Hitler on almost every occasion. Hitler (like most modern “christians” loved to give and receive books for his favorite celebrations, Christmas, his birthday, and other state celebrations. A book titled Death and Immortality in the World View of Indo-Germanic Thinkers can be found in the Hitler Library, inscribed for Hitler by the SS chief Heinrich Himmler on the occasion of "Julfest 1938" Nazi-speak for Christmas.

Based on what you have learned, you should do well on this quick test. Which of these men, women or groups celebrated and honored Christmas?

Windy

11/15/06 - 4th Day - Before Breakfast. Windy today. The front blew through at a little after midnight and the winds kicked up from the north with gusts of over 50 mph. We were used to this back on the high plains, but here we don't get these winds too often. Now it is sustained at 25-35 mph.

The are predicting the first freeze to be tomorrow morning. Weather here is interesting. We quite often get 80's throughout the winter. We get winter by fronts. When a front blows through it gets cold, but usually it is anywhere from the 50's to the 80's as the high throughout the winter. Fronts usually last from between 1 to 3 days. The high today is supposed to be about 62.

I finally got the latest impromptu sermon up this morning: The Purpose of the Devil

Y'all have a great day.

Fast Time and Slow Time

11/13/06 - 2nd Day - Before Breakfast. We had a very good and quiet Sabbath. We have a friend from the BA.com forum in town for a visit, so we did go into Santa Anna to look around a bit. Then we came back to the ranch to read and relax. I am still reading IVANHOE by Sir Walter Scott, which is a very nice story.

Yesterday on the Lord's Day, we had our singing and fellowship, and I gave an impromptu sermon on The Purpose of the Devil, which I hope to get uploaded some time today. The cows figured out how to open the fence to the top pasture, so we had to go up there a few times and put them back in. Last night we bungie corded the fence closed and we are hoping that they haven't been trying to defeat the cords all night.

You might wonder about the way I "time" the blog posts.... "before breakfast", "after lunch", etc. That timing mechanism is what we call "slow time". If someone asks you what time it is and you are on "city" or "fast time", you say "5:58 a.m.". If you are on agrarian, or "slow time", you say "before breakfast". It is a fun way to remind yourself that you are no longer punching a clock and you aren't hurried along in the stream of secular and industrial destruction by a ticking clock. Of course it gets tricky when my wife comes out where we are working and asks "what time do you want lunch". The correct answer would be "lunch time", but that might make her mad. So I try to say... "how about in an hour?", or "anytime would be fine". Anyway, going on slow time does make a difference in your attitude and helps to differentiate this life from that which we abandoned.

Here is a very good site that I have been reading this morning: http://ruralheritage.com There is a ton of good information on that site.

I hope all is well with you all. We're back to work on the root cellar this morning, and I'll try to post some pictures today or tomorrow if the Lord wills.

Election Shocker!

11/10/06 - 6th Day - Preparation of the Sabbath. After Lunch. Well, it took us a couple of days for us to get over the election results. What WILL we do? Who knew that Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas would be swept back into power in Nicaragua! We didn't vote. I mean when it comes down to a choice between communists and fascists we would rather stay home. I wonder if the Contras are secretly reforming? I wonder if they'll call? Everything old is new again.

Well, the last few days we have been busy working on the root cellar. We have one wall finished as far as the concrete goes, and we start on the second wall today. We have to buy concrete 12 bags at a time since my truck is still "inop" and we have to carry it in the van. It took 60 bags to form up one wall.

The weather has been remarkably warm, though it is cooling down now and will be seasonal for the next few days. It hit 90 yesterday.

Bet it is already winter in some places. It is supposed to get back down in the 40's tonight.

David still hasn't named his calf (that I know of), though I think they were thinking of calling her "Kahlua" or something coffeeish.

Back to work.

Elec-shun Day

11/07/06 - 3rd Day - After Breakfast. Amerika goes to the polls to elect them a new set of little parliamentary "gods" today. Fools. Why Christians Should Not Vote.

I took the day yesterday to work on some personal things and to edit some more on a book I have written. Today we are talking about taking a fun day to run down to Fredericksburg. We'll see if that works out.

It was quite chilly this morning (around 42 degrees), but they are calling for a nice warming trend. 80 today and 85 tomorrow, and maybe 86 on Thursday. It is bright and sunny right now and beautiful outside.

Hope all is well with you all.

Children's Blog and A Parable

11/05/06 - 1st Day - After Singing. We started a blog for the children so they can write down things that may be of interest to family members and others, and so they can keep track of what books they have read and those they still want to read. Check it out. If you stop by, leave them a comment because they will love it.

It rained this morning, but not much. They are calling for rain over the next two days.

A parable:

Every day a servant boy went to the field and let out a loud whistle to call in all the working stock. Each day after seeing each animal to its assigned task - the horses to the carriage, the ass to the plow - he would return to the field to work with a stubborn young ass who refused to obey. The boy would try to lead the ass from in front, but the ass would just lock his heels. The boy would try to beat the ass from behind with a whip, but the ass would just cower under the beating, refusing to budge. Eventually the boy would get tired of trying to train the ass, and he would leave him in the field and head off to his own work.

One day a weathered old ass, on is way to be hooked up to the plow for the day, walked by the stubborn ass and said, "ready for another beating today, I see".

The young ass just laughed and said, "I have learned that if I am more stubborn than the boy, then I get to spend the whole day eating in this field. Maybe you should try it."

The old ass shook his head. "That boy works for the master of these lands. However coarse his ways, and however vulgar his methods, he is trying to make you useful to the master. So long as he doesn't quit, then there is hope for you - but one day he won't even try to train you any more. He will give up on you. And soon the master will come and ask the boy why you are not being used to his advantage; why you are permitted to consume his field and are not profitable to him."

The young ass laughed again. "Let the master come with his larger whip, and let him beat me from in front and from behind. I will not be moved. I have learned if I resist through all the scourging, I am left alone to eat in this field."

The old ass looked at the young ass in the eye and said, "When the master comes he will not bring the whip or the goad. He will bring his shotgun, and he will make you profitable by selling your carcass for glue". The old ass turned and walked towards his daily duty.

Take it from an old ass... when you learn from the whip and count it profitable, you live to be an old ass.

Preparation of the Sabbath

11/03/06 - 6th Day - Before Supper. Preparation of the Sabbath. We're looking forward to a Sabbath around here. The Preparation of the Sabbath (what we call the 6th Day) is always a hectic and trying time. We are mixed with a longing for the rest of the Sabbath, and a hectic desire to make sure we have everything done. We work hard on these days. The preparation of the Sabbath is a type, given to us by God, so that we know that we must work while it is day, because night comes when no man can work. Our lives are a preparation for the Sabbath's rest, and the Sabbath is given to us for this reason, so that we know the plan and will of God, and so we can teach it to our children.

According to the scripture, we are in this world that we might be perfected for the next. Preparation, then, should be understood as that which perfects us. God allows his children to be hated, scorned, persecuted, slandered, attacked and vilified so that we will be identified with HIM who was so hated by the world. The Doctrine of Separation (along with the Doctrines of Grace), when embraced and obeyed, will guarantee persecution for the elect of God. One of our BiblicalAgrarianism.com forum members recently reminded us of the words of A.W. Pink in his excellent piece on Separatism:
"Let any Christian act on the Command of separation given in 2 Cor. 6:14-17, and he will find his path so beset with difficulties and so tending to arouse the hostility of all, that if his eyes are not kept fixed on the Almighty God who has thus called him out, he will surely have a breakdown." But let it be noted that these promises are conditional, conditional on obeying the preceding exhortations. Yet if the heart lay hold of this blessed inducement, then obedience to the command will be easy and pleasant."
Thus we understand that persecution and the hatred of the world (especially from religious worldlings and practical athiests in modern religion) is a preparation for our eternal Sabbath, and it is given to us to make us perfect.

I suppose that the internet just intensifies the effect. The day before yesterday I was called (he will claim he just "implied" that I am) a murderer by a fanatical (but anonymous) Catholic mystic. He was immediately applauded by some another amoral religiousites. Yesterday I was called a "skinhead in a Christian suit" by a religious profiteer who was mad that I didn't let him use my website for some free advertising. That was only two days of the week... Monday and Tuesday were worse.

Count it all Joy

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (James 1:2-4)
It is beneficial to know that these days are given to us for a purpose, and that God is working in us according to His own will.

The Sabbath rest is soon upon us, and these days are given to us for preparation. May we use them properly and according to the Word of God.

Working on it

11/02/06 - 5th Day - After Breakfast. I am working on putting some more pics up here, though it has been troublesome. Maybe by the end of this posting some might appear. I have also been unsuccessful in uploading the latest impromptu sermon. I will keep working on it.

Yesterday was a big day on the Longhorn Cattle front. David's heife
r ROSA became a cow. She gave birth to a brand new baby calf. No name yet, but I'll report on it when I know. Also, our good friend Frank brought out a bull for us to keep for a few months. Hopefully this bull (he has a name that I can't remember or pronounce yet, but I'll get back with you... I'M WORKING ON IT!) will impregnate our four cows sometime in November. This means we should be calving again in August if the Lord wills. I also will try to get a picture of the bull. I am working on it. Ok, pic #1:

This is a picture of my portion of the middle front pasture (we call it the Sifford's Pasture).

Here is Mihai working on "shaping" the timbers for the frame of the root cellar.

Ok, I finally got the latest impromptu sermon up:

Lawful but not Expedient

If you are looking for past impromptu sermons or any of my other online audio sermons.

Ok, the bull is named Quitach
ón... I'm pretty sure. I have no idea what that means.

More later...

Quick Note

11/01/06 - 4th Day - After Breakfast. Been working this morning on this. Honour will only once again become a trait of our people when we insist on it in ourselves, teach it to our children, and we ignore or flog those who lack it.

Cooler weather today and the rest of this week. 50 degrees right now, and 50's as the high for the next few days. Welcome, November.

Yesterday we cut more posts for the root cellar. I am looking forward to finally getting to work on the roof of it soon. Today, I will try to see if I can get a butcher to take our hog.

Hope all is well with you and yours,

Michael
