Growing Up Agrarian

We are four Christian, homechurched, homeschooled, homesteading, agrarian children growing up in Central Texas on a Ranch. We are Tracy,(15) Jennifer,(10) Robert,(9) and Sarah(5) Bunker. We also have one more brother, Thomas Shepard Bunker, who is in the courts of glory. We like to read books, raise animals, and play on the land. Tracy will be writing about the stuff we do. We hope you enjoy our Adventures!

Mesquite Coffee, Tea and.... Tortillas?

Howdy Y'all!

It's Tracy Bunker here today with a new breakthrough! Introducing.......

MESQUITE TORTILLAS!!

Just grind lightly roasted, snapped mesquite beans in a grinder and sit out seeds ( they seem to be too hard for the grinder to crush) the mesquite will be a rough floury consistency. They might also be a little sticky. The less you roast them, the more sticky they will be. Here is the recipie I use :

1/2 cup mesquite granola ( we will be adding more and more with each batch hoping to overcome the flour competley)
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
3 tablespoons oil
1 cup of hot water

Combine all dry ingredients and mix well. In a smaller bowl, place water and oil ( I know these will not mix, but this is my method) Pour wet mix in a circle motion into dry mix. Stir thoroughly with a fork (it will look dry but only add water if it does not clump up) Mix with your hands and add water until it is soft but not sticky. Roll into a neat ball and grab as much as you can in your hand with your fingers touching the bottom of your palm with your thumb extended. ( If that makes sense) Roll into neat ball and repeat until your dough is divided into equal parts. Flour flat surface and rolling pin lightly and roll into 8 inch circles. Heat a cast iron comal and cook until freckled on both sides. Put into a covered container with a towel to absorb any moisture from steam.

These have a great cinnamon taste with a nice healthy look to them (they are light tan instead of pasty white).

It has been kind of cool here this evening, but I have not checked the exact temp.. It sprinkled this morning. Praise The Lord! The cloud cover was wonderful. And it kind of clouded up this evening, too. We have been sleeping on the deck a lot lately becuse the camper has problems cooling off.

The rabbits have been overheating a lot lately so I dip them in water and rub their ears with ice. They get really hot really fast and it is a chore to keep up with their hydration.

Stay Tuned! Pictures of the tortillas and a Praying Mantis that loves Robert coming up!

Hot, hot, hot!

Hello

Today we are just trying to staying cool! It was 105 degrees yesterday! We have been sleeping on the deck just to get the breeze. It was 80 degrees this morning, which was a nice break. We have been dipping Sugar in the cow tank to keep her cool. She loves licking a ice cube until it is gone. Smart dog. We lost Jose' the Californian male to heatstroke yesterday. He was a big rabbit and just not built for this kind of weather.

We have been picking up a lot of mesquite pods. A LOT of mesquite pods, people. Buckets of these things. But it is all worth it when you sit down with a glass of delicious tea.Tea made only of the Lord's provision. Water from the sky, pods from the trees right here on the land. Praise the Lord for his grace.

If you have a minuite, we would suggest you run over to mom's blog, " A Process Diven Wife" and catch dad doing his "Double Ringer Dance", a video mom posted in response to the silly photo of her on dad's blog. We are not picking sides in the goofy picture war, but we are enjoying the show.
Oh yeah, and thank you to the Ante Agrarians for nominating us for the Best Blog Award.
Until Next Time,
The Bunker Children

Sugar the Black Mouthed Kerr

Hello

It has been a long time! We have been very busy lately. First, Mom and Dad went on a trip to Fredricksburg for a anniversary trip, then dad left (with the laptop) to go help a brother in PA, then after he got back, our friends the Marcics from Florida came and visited and then our Grandmother and Aunt Tracy and our cousin Townsend came to visit and we went out to the lakehouse they rented and swam in the lake, had a cookout, and Dad beat Aunt Tracy SO bad at horseshoes. But she came back, and as soon as she sends Tracy the pictures, we will post them.

We caught a 4 foot 6 inch rat snake but he got away ( not before he bit Robert!). He was really strong and smooth. We also caught a tarantula while the Marcics were here. But we had to let him go because he was hungry.

DAD BOUGHT US A PUPPY!!!! Introducing Sugar the Black-mouthed Kerr. She's cute, she's brilliant, she's loveable and she thinks she's tough stuff! She loves Mom, can't stand 4year old Sarah and knows how to sit, shake, lay down, and come. She is soooo smart!

Well, we will write more later.
