Growing Up Agrarian

We are four Christian, homechurched, homeschooled, homesteading, agrarian children growing up in Central Texas on a Ranch. We are Tracy,(15) Jennifer,(10) Robert,(9) and Sarah(5) Bunker. We also have one more brother, Thomas Shepard Bunker, who is in the courts of glory. We like to read books, raise animals, and play on the land. Tracy will be writing about the stuff we do. We hope you enjoy our Adventures!

Acorns, gardens, and tricycles for Sarah......

Hello,

We have been doing garden\yard work lately. The garden is sprouting and we watered it and took out the weeds yesterday. And Mom pulled out all of her dead wildflowers around Thomas' memorial plum tree so the new , green sprouts can see the sun.

We have also been picking up lots of acorns around the big oak tree. There are hundreds of them and our plan is to dry and store 3 trashcans full of them for winter pig food. We are trying to pick 1 bucket a day.

Sarah got a new, red Radio Flier tricycle from Mr. and Mrs. McCauley ( Mrs. Sifford's parents). We also got a volleyball, badminton, and baseball sets. We are having a blast with them between chore-times.

Jethro died two weeks ago. After we wrote that blog about how great he was doing. He just started having convulsions Monday night before the meeting and after the meeting he was dead. We buried him in the "pet cemetery" beside Cocoa. We make little markers with cut fence slats. And we paint the names of the pets on them.

We are milking Holga in the mornings now. We get an average of 1 quart in one milking. We don't get much cream, because the milk is very lean, like longhorn meat.

Well, the first Ranchfest guests are getting here tomorrow. Dad is going to pick up the Billman family in San Antonio tomorrow.

Until next time,
The Bunker Children

Jethro

Lots of rain here today! We spent a good forty-five minutes bailing the water from the trashcans in the front into the 2500 gallon black catch-water tank. Dad says it's about half full. And, boy, by the time we were done, we were soaked to the bone! It was lots of fun.

We named our rejected piglet Jethro. He is doing well and getting stronger. Tracy keeps Betedine on his wounds and feeds him bovine colostrum about once every hour from a soda bottle fitted with a lamb-sized nipple. At night, he eats about every two hours. His normal feeding is 5 ml. but he eats a lot in the evening. He sleeps the rest of the time, which is very good. He seems to be getting stronger and he can stand on three of his legs, only one of the front ones was punctured in the upper leg close to his chest, we assume by one of his mother's teeth. Please keep our little friend in your prayers.

Tracy is hoping to breed her rabbits October 1st, so we are preparing a nursery hutch and moving all of the hutches behind the tool shed, closer to the house.

We caught our new bull calf Chico and pet him to accustom him to being handled so we can begin working with him when he is weaned. He is so cute, and we look forward to turning him into a well behaved steer.

We are looking forward to Ranchfest 07 and hope it will be a enjoyable time of learning and fellowship. No play is scheduled, unless Jennifer changes her mind about directing one. More info on that later.

Well, until next time, have a wonderful, wet day!

Over and out,
The Bunker Mini-Vets.

Piglets

Hey! It has been awhile! Dad's computer is broken, so he has been doing his work off of Mom's, which we usually write blogs from. So Mom's computer has been occupied.

We have 7 piglets and one of them was rejected by the mother, so we are bottlefeeding it and it was bitten and scratched and it's tail was bitten off, so we cleaned it up and put some pine tar on it. It is doing very well, and Tracy is feeding it warm powdered milk every 20 minutes.

Holga, Maria and Ami had their calves. We have not named Maria's heifer calf, but Holga's bull calf is named Chico. We put a halter on him. We (Lord Willing) will begin milking Holga soon.

Ella is doing very well, she is filling out and getting cuter every day.

Well, Have a nice day!
